Rule Set: Letter sounds & letter combinations

Spelling Rule :
'vv' or 'uu' looks like: 'w'
An exception to the silent 'e' rule.

Words in English tend not to end with the letter 'v' or 'u'. This is because centuries ago people thought that if either the letter 'v' or 'u' at the end of a word was doubled, that it might look like the letter 'w'. This is sometimes why the letter 'e' is added at the end of a word.

However, when you find a word like menu or flu, it's because these are either foreign words or abbreviations that pop up in the English language.

Spelling Rule: _'ve' at the end of a word.

Normally: _'ve' at the end of a word has a short vowel sound.

Examples:give, have, live, love, solve

However, there are exceptions with a long vowel sound.

Spelling Rule: _'ue' at the end of a word.

All this confusion comes from the 1580s when Richard Mulcaster tried to standardised spelling by adding 'e' to words.
